Grant funding has been obtained through the Local Nutrient Mitigation Fund, with the awarded funds being used to develop schemes that generate nutrient credits, helping to unlock housing in the Solent.
Mitigation is dependent on the location of the development and the challenges faced in that area. A one-size-fits-all method is not feasible.
The Solent and River Itchen benefit from international protection for their diverse ecosystems and wildlife. These sites are being negatively impacted by excessive levels of nutrients – any further increase from the existing levels of nutrients could have a devastating effect on these important habitats.
To prevent further harm, any new development in South Hampshire that includes overnight accommodation must seek nutrient mitigation. This ensures that growth in the region does not come at the expense of the natural environment.
Developers can buy credits with confidence as all of our schemes are approved by Natural England, the organisation responsible for providing Local Planning Authorities with advice to ensure that local planning decisions align with national environmental regulations.
A benefit of purchasing credits from schemes delivered by the Solent Mitigation Partnership is that financial returns are reinvested locally into further nutrient mitigation schemes, supporting sustainable development across the region. Once nutrient mitigation is no longer required, the remaining funds will be used to help enable the restoration of protected waterways.
By adopting a strategic approach, the Solent Mitigation Partnership is helping to ensure that, alongside the private market, mitigation is available to meet the planned long-term growth across the Solent. Our mission is to facilitate carefully planned placemaking without compromising the Solent.
