As part of a strategic initiative, the Solent Mitigation Partnership is working to deliver upgrades to private septic tanks (domestic sewerage systems) across Hampshire starting in Bishop Sutton area. These upgrades will convert existing septic tanks into more advanced package treatment plants (PTPs), significantly improving the removal of nutrients from wastewater before it enters sensitive water environments.
Once this grant scheme is operational, these upgrades will generate nutrient credits that developers can purchase to support housing and projects.
By delivering targeted improvements to domestic sewage infrastructure, it will help unlock stalled development, support local housing delivery, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations- all while protecting the Solent’s unique and sensitive natural environment.
A former farmland site in Stubbington is now a nature recovery area, reducing nutrient runoff into the Solent. The project has generated over 400 verified nutrient credits to support sustainable development in the region.
